It’s Sofie from behind the scenes of Goesting in Taal 😊
As you can see, I’m on holidays in Lebanon! Now, you are probably thinking: “What does that have to do with Goesting in Taal?” Well, strangely enough: a lot! This is where it all began. The idea of Goesting in Taal was born right here!
How did that happen?
In 2011, I went to Lebanon for the first time, to discover the homeland of my husband and to meet his family. I had been studying Arabic in Belgium for two years. With great teachers and nice results. Still, when I got there, I was shocked to discover I could barely understand people and couldn’t communicate in the most simple situations!!!
… I discovered the Saifi Institute in Beirut, which specializes in classes on colloquial Lebanese. I signed up for a four week intensive training right away.
This course changed my life! For the first time, the things I was learning in class, were exactly what I was hearing outside of class! What a reassuring feeling.
On top of that, I was blown away by the warm and enthusiastic reactions of the Lebanese whenever I used typical local expressions. Even just the use of ‘kifak’ and ‘kifik’, the Lebanese version of ‘Hoe is’t?’ made the conversations much more smooth and authentic. At the end of the four weeks, I was finally able to have a basic conversation with my parents in law!
Learning informal language to understand the people around you better and to open the door to their hearts…
I thought: Why couldn’t this be possible in Belgium?
And so, the first seed for the idea of Goesting in Taal was planted 😊
